Twenty-five percent of Americans die as a direct result of substance abuse...

90% of high school seniors are drinking,

    53% are getting drunk at least once a month,

        43% are smoking marijuana, and 36% are smoking cigarettes.

The average18 year old in the US has seen 100,000 television commercials encouraging him or her to drink. And those who begin drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who begin at age 21 (NIAAA).

Substance Abuse and Sexual Activity

Did You Know? Teens who drink are seven times likelier and teens that use drugs are five times likelier than those who don’t to have sexual intercourse.

Did You Know? Teens who use alcohol are twice as likely and teens that use drugs are three times as likely to have sexual intercourse with four or more individuals.

Did You Know? Alcohol use--by the victim, the perpetrator or both--is the number one culprit in date rapes of college women.

Did You Know? Heavy or chronic use of many substances including alcohol, cocaine and amphetamines--thought to enhance sexual arousal, pleasure and performance--actually have the opposite effect.

Did You Know? Women sexually abused as children are more likely to abuse alcohol and drugs; men sexually abused as children are likelier to use drugs and commit sex offenses.

How to Recognize a Drinking Problem

Not everyone who drinks regularly has a drinking problem. You might want to get help if you:

bulletDrink to calm your nerves, forget your worries, or reduce depression
bulletLose interest in food
bulletGulp your drinks down fast
bulletLie or try to hide your drinking habits
bulletDrink alone more often
bulletHurt yourself, or someone else, while drinking
bulletWere drunk more than three or four times last year
bulletNeed more alcohol to get "high"
bulletFeel irritable, resentful, or unreasonable when you are not drinking
bulletHave medical, social, or financial problems caused by drinking

From the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

Moderate drinking is defined as no more than one drink a day for women and no more than two drinks per day for men. Twelve ounces of beer; 5 ounces of wine; or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits (80 proof) counts as one drink. (US Dept. of Agriculture & USDHHS, Nutrition and Your Health: Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 1995).
